1. What do I need to do to join the International Students Club at Pierce?
Nothing. Yes, It's absolutely free. You can just join us on Facebook and follow us. And attend one of our two meetings but it's not mandatory.
Just enjoy your time with us!
2. Do I have to attend every meeting? What happens if I don’t attend a meeting?
Nope. You are going to miss some awesome time full of joy, that's about it..But we advise you to try and attend meetings so you know what events are coming on ..
3. Can international students apply for federal financial aid such as the FAFSA?
F-1 visa international students are not eligible to apply for federal financial aid. However, you may be eligible to apply for independent scholarships. Here are a few links to scholarship databases:Link1 & Link2
4. What is Metro and Metro iTAP Bus Pass?
METRO is the LA based bus/subway system. There is a Special low fair Bus pass issued to Full time Pierce Collage Students for $15
($20 for the First time buyers), which is valid for the semester
length(Spring / Fall). This Pass is valid to be used on any Metro
Bus/Train for the semester period. Right now it's $1.50 oneway or $6 oneday. Do the math guys...It saves a lot to have a $15 Bus pass
which u can use anytime/any metro local/rapid/subway for a semester period.
5. What is the easiest way to get to Pierce using public transportation?
In many cases, the most convenient way is to take the Metro Orange Line. However, this really depends on your starting point. Another way to get this information is to use the Metro Trip planner, or Google maps selecting your way of transport (Bus/car/bike)Just type in your starting point address and the destination you are going, and most of the time the system will have bus lists which includes time.
6. Do I need a Social Security Number (SSN) to open a U.S. bank account or apply for a California driver’s license/ID ?
No, you do not need an SSN to open a U.S. bank account or apply for a CA ID/driver’s license. However, you will need to present a valid I-20 (if you renewed your I-20, the original one and the renewed one), your passport with I-94 form attached to it. As of September 2010, they ask $26 for this process. CA DMV site
7. As an international student, what are my work options?
Your work options are limited since your primary purpose to enter the USA is to finish your academic program as listed on your I-20A form. However, you do have some options! The International Student Services department offers detailed workshops explaining your employment opportunities. These workshops are generally held at the beginning of every Fall and Spring semester.
8. How do I pick my classes next semester?
If you are having trouble figuring out which classes to take next semester, schedule an appointment with the International Student Services Counselor at (818) 719-6417. The Pierce main counseling website also has useful information:
9. I want to go home for summer break. Do I need to do anything to re-enter the US?
Yes, please make sure you meet with a DSO in the ISS office. Bring your current I-20. You will need to fill out a Travel Signature Request Form so the DSO can sign the third page of your I-20 if your are eligible to travel.
The DSO’s signature is required for re-entry. Also make sure your passport and visa are valid!
Call (818) 719-6417 to schedule an appointment to meet with the DSO or stop by the office when you are on campus.
Allow 1 – 3 business days for all document requests.
10. How do I meet more American friends?
The International Students Club has American members! Membership is not limited to F-1 students. However, if you want to meet more Americans, you can join other Pierce student clubs.
